Known also as Detroit or Motor City Agate, Fordite is a fascinating material created as a byproduct of the automobile industry. When it came time for bodywork panels to be sprayed, they were mounted to specially made jigs in painting chambers.

Over time, the overspray would build up on the jigs and need to be chipped off so they could continue to be used. Initially considered nothing but a waste product, these lumps of layered paint, resprayed and baked repeatedly for years, were discarded until someone realized the incredible beauty that resided within.

Nowadays, genuine Fordite (which is far more compact and durable than synthetic or homemade Motor City Agate) is used in jewelry production. Arcanaut’s materials maestro, James Thompson, was the first to refine the process for using it in high-end watch design, and now the Arcanaut ARC II - Fordite pieces form an important cornerstone of our collection.

There are three types of Fordite dials crafted by Arcanaut: The “Ripple Milled” variety seen here, takes either a "Linear" or "Groovy" dial and mills a three-dimensional pattern into it.

Arcanaut has developed a process they call "Ripple Milling." This enables them to carve topographical patterns into Fordite itself, revealing multiple levels of the material at once, allowing us to "look back through time".

They've applied the technique (which requires a lot of patient preparation and then a very delicate machining process) to both Groovy and Linear dials and experimented with unique patterns for each. Some are smooth and organic, others are jagged and futuristic.

The dial is not the only thing that makes the Arc II unique. The case, with is curved profile and scalloped sides, along with an unusual crown that always aligns with the case, make this Scandinavian watch something truly distinct.

Note: The images used on this product listed are composite renders that give a realistic impression of what the watch will look like when finally assembled. Due to the unique nature of each Fordite dial, the orientation may be slightly altered from the image displayed here to ensure the dial is optimally legible and interacts with natural light in the most pleasing manner.
